Fort Myers Fishing Report 8-1-14

The Bait is starting to show up! This is good news for anglers looking to cast net a few pilchards or Snook candy as i call them. In reality they are candy to just about everything that swims inshore. They have been sporadic the past week but have been around somewhat. Chum a flat and wait, a few little tips for bait fishing is to make sure that the boat is anchored off the stern, that way you can throw the net off the bow, to do so you will have to determine which way the tide is going then set up your anchor off the stern or just drop your power pole.  Pinfish have still been my go to bait because they have been more reliable to find. I stayed down in the south part of the bay this week and it proved successful. Redfish, Snook, and Jacks were the typical catch. Look for Redfishing to get steadily better, we are not far away from fall time (even though it doesn’t feel like it) and that means BIG schools of Redfish will soon be all over our flats in Estero Bay!

We were greeted this week by high tides in the middle of the days, this time of year that usually means successful trips and it definitely did this week. The mornings have been slow with the water creeping in to the bay, but being patient and waiting for the tide to get right has paid off later. Redfish have been chewing good, as well as some very nice Snook, unfortunately we lost more big Snook than we caught this week! I always like to have a couple different set ups when fishing with Pinfish for bait, a couple rods rigged with corks and a couple just straight line to leader with a 2/0 circle hook. This week they wanted nothing to do with the cork set up and preferred a tail hooked Pinfish. You never really know what they will want so that’s why it pays to have variety. There has been a lingering Tarpon presence just off the beaches and there has been a few fellow guides that have been targeting them with great success. Use threadfins for the Tarpon and be patient they can be finicky.  Chum a flat for the pins it wont take long before you have enough bait for a trip.  I fished the north part of Estero Bay earlier in the week until the fish stopped biting up there. Later in the week we fished the south part of the bay and had better success. Remember that this time of year anywhere outside the red and green markers is a no wake zone! Meaning that the bow must be completely in the water, remember that when fishing an area and allow some extra time to get to some spots further from channels.

Family Fishing In Fort Myers

It’s not always about being super competitive and catching fish, sometimes its not even about being out on a boat fishing. This week proved that to me as i got a great chance to fish with my nephew at a local lake. This fishing is super easy but the excitement of the entire experience for the kids can be great and just another reason why i love fishing and taking people fishing. Swing by Wal-Mart and pick up some night crawlers for bait. Stick em with a 2/0 circle hook and a small weight (no need for a leader) and you’re in business! It didn’t take long before we were hooked up and i promise it was something he will remember forever!

Rain Rain and more RAIN! That has been the story this week all over our region. Luckily for us though there hasn’t been storms to severe to go fishing. I provide rain gear for my clients and never purposely put them in harms way. Despite these conditions the fishing has been good, as i always say the fish don’t mind they are already wet! There has been some big mangrove snapper reported however i have been focusing on Snook and Reds. There is still no good sized white bait around and i expect that to continue for at least a few more weeks. So Pinfish it is! Chum a flat close to an edge and be patient, they will soon be in your net. For the Snook i have been fishing around docks and passes so a cork to hold them up in the water column is not always needed. When fishing around mangroves in the back parts of Estero Bay i have been using the cork with better success and landing decent Redfish. Trout are all over the near shore artificial reefs and will eat a piece of cut threadfin or even pinfish on the bottom. There is a plethora of species to be caught in the Gulf waters right now from Trout to Mackerel to grouper,  snapper and sharks. Bring plenty of sunscreen and i have been doubling up on the water for my clients in preparation for these hot humid days. Mid days are tough so i recommend stopping for a bite to eat around that time, try “Flippers On The Bay” its the best restaurant in Estero Bay you wont be disappointed!

Fort Myers Fishing Report 7-9-14

Fishing this week is still going strong, alot of what was true last week is still true this week. The weather is HOT and we are getting frequent afternoon showers. It has been a common theme that the mornings and late afternoons have been best. There are Redfish and Snook around and they are willing to eat a Pinfish on a cork with a short leader. This past week i have noticed that the fish have been more likely to eat with this set up. Redfish have been hanging around oyster bars and flats on the outgoing and the Snook have been in the passes and also around bars and edges. On the falling tides focus on passes, on the incoming focus on bars and edges.  As always 30lb leader and a 2/0 Owner Mutu light is the set up. An important thing to remember is to stay far away from any spots you are fishing. Alot of times it is best to scale down your line to a 10lb or 15lb braid to get longer casts, anglers who do are rewarded by more fish. To make up for the lighter line tie a spider hitch or a small Bimini twist knot to double the line and make it stronger before tying the leader to it.  Bait is there as long as you have some chum and a good cast net. Do your self a favor and buy a Tim Wade net, he makes the best custom nets available and at a reasonable price. Summer is in full swing so that means there is pretty much only locals fishing our waters, a perfect time to get out and find some fish without a ton of pressure!

It is officially July! The weather here in Fort Myers is HOT and the fishing has reflected it. Snook have been eating well, Redfish have around but not as prevalent and Trout are on the wrecks and reefs near to shore. Tarpon season for me is done for so that means focusing solely on Snook and Reds for the next couple months.  The big girls are on the beaches of Sanibel, they can best be found in the very early morning hours in the surf. Use a Threadfin for the big snook, or a Pinfish. Remember they are catch and release right now and these fish are the breeder fish so handle them with extreme care. If at all possible don’t remove them from the water and NEVER use a net! I use 30lb leader still for these fish as it increases the bite chances. You will lose a few but its better than not getting any bites. Redfish have been far in the back hanging around mangrove shorelines with some cover from the sun. Look for a good shoreline with current and shade and focus on the high stages of the tide. Pinfish have been best for the Reds. It’s the week of this great countries independence! If you are out on the water please be safe and don’t drink while boating the FWC will be cracking down on drinking on the water. Get out and have some fun during this great holiday!
