Fort Myers Fishing Report 10-2-14

October has started the exact same way September left off with Redfish galore. in the years past i have changed the name from October to “Redtober” because the massive amount of reds caught during the month. Well we are two days in to the month and that saying has proved to be true once again. All this great red fishing started back in 2009 when the Snook population died off quite a bit due to the very cold water temps.  Redfish do very well in a variety of temperatures and the cold didn’t bother them, as a matter of fact with less competition from the snook they really took off! Now a few years later we are reaping the rewards of that natural occurrence. They are still in the exact places they were in September and the numbers haven’t changed either. Look for them tailing on falling tides or in schools, on high tides fish the trees and oyster bars. Go with the pinfish still and use the pilchards you will get on the flats for chum. The average size is 24″ but we have caught some over slot and some others have reported large almost 40″ reds being caught in Estero Bay. Season is about to really kick in to gear for all the guides here so if you are planning a trip with someone book soon because there won’t be many spots left. Get out on the water and catch some fish!

Fort Myers Fishing Report 9-29-14

On my fishing charters this week anglers have seen some of the best fishing of the year. They have been fortunate enough to have timed their trip around what is easily the best opportunities to catch multiple fish species in high numbers. As anticipated i have focused on Redfish and there is still plenty of them around and willing to eat anything from an artificial lure to live bait. I have been using pinfish with the best success. Don’t bother using a cork to hang the baits if you’re around the bushes fishing, they have preferred them on the bottom tail hooked. If you are on the grass flats fishing for them then sometimes a cork is best, try them both ways and see which one gets more bites. The bait can be found on the flats with good chum, every trip i have been getting good numbers of pilchards however i have been using them mainly for live chum as the pins have been the best producers. Take a handful of pilchards out of the well lightly crush them and toss them in to the area you plan to fish, If there is any fish in there you should know shortly. Again look for it to only get better in October, Redfish should be around and hungry through November. Get out and enjoy our areas fishing at its finest!

Fishing is on fire right now! The fishing is at the best it will be all year in our area right now. The conditions are perfect and the fish are pretty much everywhere. Every type of fish that swims in our waters can be caught right now with success. I have mostly fished for Redfish recently, they are all over Estero Bay and when and where you fish for them, as always, is based on the tide. Flats on low, bushes on high is the key to success. Scrap the hunt for pilchards because the pinfish have been producing four to one better than any other. The pinfish are on the flats and willing to show up rather quickly with the right mixture of chum tossed in front of your boat. I believe the longest i fished for bait was twenty minutes this wee, and that’s only because i had an eight hour trip! Daily catches have been reported as high as 30 reds on a four hour trip this week in Estero Bay. I have been averaging 10 to 15 on a 4 hour trip! Thats not fishing that’s catching! If you just want to bend a rod look in the passes and on the beaches, there has been schools of jack as well as Spanish mackerel everywhere. Look for birds and you’ll find them. There are sharks offshore, as well as Tarpon, Inshore there is Snook, Trout and Redfish. Look for it to continue to be good in our area through October, or should i say Redtober! If you are a local and thinking of hiring a guide for that once a year trip, this is the best time to do it. Not alot of people out on the water and the fish are everywhere!

Fort Myers Fishing Report 9-19-2014

Rain wont stop the good fishing! There has been alot of rainy days this past week in Fort Myers and Estero Bay but it hasn’t’  stopped me from finding fish and being successful on the water. The rain luckily was not accompanied by any lightning and you know my motto “no lightning were going”! Safety is paramount when deciding on cancelling a fishing trip, but if its only rain i provide the rain gear for my customers and were off. Call me crazy but i kind of like fishing in the rain, we’re the ONLY ones out there and it stays cool all day! The fishing is some of the best it has been and will be all year. Fall is magic in our area, and the fish typically make us Fort Myers Fishing Guides look really good. They don’t seem to mind what the tide is doing they are feeding on either the outgoing or the incoming. All you have to do is figure out what it is doing and set up accordingly to maximize your chances. Fish grass flats on the outgoing and bushes on the incoming. This is a great time to try your hand at artificial fishing as they can cover alot of ground on a flat and the fish are hungry and not picky enough that even the inexperienced anglers can catch a few with fake baits. An important thing to remember when fishing a flat is to make sure you are being stealthy and not damaging our grass. Keep your trolling motor up when really shallow and use a push pole, also NEVER run your boat across any of them. These grass flats are a VITAL part of our areas Eco system and we need everyone to take care of it if we want it to be around for future generations to enjoy. Snook season is open but don’t keep them, the population will thank you later! Bait is around the beaches and everything is hungry for it. Get out and catch some fish while it’s not busy on the water!
